School plan
The Murmellius Gymnasium is a small-scale, public grammar school in the heart of Alkmaar. A school where everyone knows and sees each other. Through Greek and Latin, we connect classical culture with the world of today. Broad development is central: inside and outside the classroom, you challenge yourself, discover who you are, and step through the gate to your future.
A special symbol is the historic gate on our grounds. This gate, which has been associated with grammar school education in Alkmaar since the seventeenth century, symbolizes what we stand for: the Murmellius Gymnasium as a gateway to the future of our students.
Respect, equality, and room for differences form the basis of our school climate.
Our education: classical and contemporary

As a gymnasium, we provide education rooted in a humanist tradition. This means that we assume students have the ability to think for themselves, take responsibility, and view the world critically. Knowledge of classical languages and antiquity forms an important foundation in this regard.
At the same time, we are a contemporary grammar school. In our lessons, we connect with current events, students work together on challenging assignments, and we make use of modern teaching materials. Students learn not only facts and theories, but also skills such as researching, reflecting, planning, and collaborating.
In this way, we prepare our students for further education and for their role in society.

School Guide
School hours, structure and organization
The school year at Murmellius Gymnasium is well-organized and clearly structured. Lessons are taught according to a fixed schedule, and students know what to expect. We try to prevent class cancellations as much as possible.

Guidance and support

Every student at Murmellius Gymnasium has a mentor. The mentor is the first point of contact for students and parents and monitors the student's development at school. Mentor lessons focus on study skills, planning, collaboration, and well-being.
In Year 6, you may choose your own mentor.
In addition to the mentor, there are other supervisors, such as the care coordinator and student counselors. Together, they ensure that students feel seen and receive appropriate support when needed.
