The Murmellius Gymnasium Alkmaar: the gateway to your future

01

Culture

Much of our extracurricular program is named after former Rector Dr. Jacob Hemelrijk. During the Hemelrijkdagen, students visit Museum Boerhaave, Archeon, and Naturalis, among others. In addition, we have an extensive travel program, culminating in the trip to Rome in the fifth year. Exchanges to France and Hungary, and language trips to London, Berlin, and Paris complete the program.

Under the name Atelier Hemelrijk, we offer a broad cultural program: from a school band and opera club to an active debate club. Our students also organize IMUNA annually.

03

Learning to choose

The Dean's Office helps students 'learn to choose'. The time when you stayed with the same employer for life is long gone. Due to a rapidly changing society, we must think flexibly and make new choices. We want to teach students how to do this by discovering their interests and qualities and introducing them to various possibilities. This aligns with our ambitions in the school plan, where gaining personal experiences is central.

02

Support

Student support is essential in education to help students grow into independent and self-aware young adults. Our students learn the skills necessary for (school) success and take responsibility for their learning process. Support focuses on functioning in a regular classroom setting, and the activities offered both in and outside of class are determined in collaboration with the team.

04

Strong mentorship

Mentors play a central role in student guidance and are the first point of contact for students and parents. Our mentorship believes that every student deserves attention, regardless of grades or behavior. Mentors help with problems and ask the right questions through regular contact. Students have an introductory meeting in the first week and two mentor hours per week during Year 1. There is an annual meeting with the parent(s)/guardian(s). In Years 4 and 5, a three-way meeting takes place with the student and the parent(s)/guardian(s).

But not ready for secondary school yet?!

Intermezzo is a transitional year for students with pre-university potential, in which they work purposefully on their academic, social-emotional, and metacognitive skills. Through challenging education, appropriate support, and the power of a close-knit peer group, students discover who they are, how they learn, and what they need to grow.
